Toward Peace and Justice in Brazil: Dominic Barter and Restorative Circles

Dominic Barter has helped bring restorative practices to the poverty-ridden favelas (shantytowns) of urban Brazil, where violence is endemic, drug gangs rule and murder is the principal cause of death for people under 25. With input from shantytown residents, a model for nonviolent communication has emerged that gives all parties a voice. Called "restorative circles," the model is proving highly effective in resolving conflicts in schools, criminal justice and other settings.

This article includes information about how the model is being implemented throughout Brazil, as well as comments from Dominic Barter.
